Hip Osteoarthritis: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Hip Osteoarthritis: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis. It’s a joint condition that occurs as a result of wear and tear on the cartilage in the joint. While various factors can accelerate the process of joint degeneration, it mainly occurs as a result of aging.

The hip is the body’s biggest weight-bearing joint. So, hip osteoarthritis can have a large and adverse effect on your range of motion and ability to move comfortably.

The Symptoms of Hip Osteoarthritis

Pain is the main symptom of hip osteoarthritis. Generally, this condition causes hip pain that gradually progresses. Pain from hip osteoarthritis also tends to be particularly bad in the morning, after prolonged periods of being sedentary, and/or after intense exercise. The pain may start in the thigh or groin area and radiate down to the knee or up to the buttocks.

Along with hip pain, the symptoms of hip osteoarthritis can include:

  • Stiffness and a reduced range of motion in the hip
  • Difficulting walking and bending due to hip stiffness
  • A limp caused by hip stiffness
  • A locking sensation in the hip
  • Grinding noise in the hip that occurs with motion (crepitus)

Hip Osteoarthritis Diagnosis

Hip osteoarthritis is typically diagnosed with a physical examination and imaging tests.

  • The physical exam is used to identify hip pain, tenderness, reduced range of motion, crepitus, a limp, and injured tissues around the hip.
  • Imaging tests, like x-rays, can show signs of hip osteoarthritis including bone changes, bone spurs, and narrowed space within the hip joint.

Treatments for Hip Osteoarthritis

Physicians generally begin with non-surgical treatments for hip osteoarthritis, such as physical therapy, lifestyle recommendations, pain medications, and walking support devices. If these methods fail to provide significant pain relief, surgery may be required.

Total hip replacement and hip resurfacing are surgical treatments that can resolve osteoarthritis symptoms. Hip arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive procedure that can prevent the progression of hip osteoarthritis.
